Ook als ik lieg, is het nog steeds heel veel. Ongeveer net zoveel als over The Beatles, denk ik. Maar dat is niet echt \u2018een artiest\u2019, meer \u2018een band\u2019, dus nogmaals, en dit keer met volle overtuiging: BOB DYLAN IS DE MEEST BESCHREVEN ARTIEST ALLER TIJDEN. Hoe dan ook heeft het dus weinig zin om hier op de proppen te komen met \u2018wist-je-dat\u2019-jes over een man van wie ik eigenlijk maar weinig weet, zeker als je die kennis vergelijkt met die van al die andere mensen die zoveel meer over hem weten en hebben geschreven.<\/p>\n<p>Dus kijk ik. Wat ik zie is een jonge, zelfverzekerde man die het \u00e9\u00e9n en ander overpeinst, de om hem heen veranderende realiteit overweegt en op zich in laat werken. De opgetrokken wenkbrauw doet vermoeden dat dit proces enig wantrouwen bij hem opwekt.<\/p>\n<p>De foto diende als cover van Dylans derde studioalbum \u2018The Times They Are a-Changin\u2019\u2019 en werd gemaakt in een periode die vervat werd in diezelfde titel (ok\u00e9, toch wat feitjes). 1963 was het jaar dat John F. Kennedy vermoord werd en Martin Luther King zijn \u2018I have a dream\u2019-speech gaf. Het was het jaar dat een levensverzekeringsmaatschappij de smiley uitvond en The Beatles hun eerste album uitbrachten. Het was ook het jaar dat Dylan van de set van The Ed Sullivan Show wegliep omdat de producers hem verboden een politiek-satirisch nummer te spelen. Genoeg om over na te denken dus.<\/p>\n<p>Dylan, een voornaam exponent van de popcultuur van de jaren \u201860, werd in een New Yorks penthouse door zijn vriend Barry Feinstein op intieme wijze gepotretteerd. In het overzichtswerk \u2018Real Moments\u2019 zegt de fotograaf in \u00e9\u00e9n van zijn spaarzame commentaren dat hij tijdens hun fotosessies wist dat hij \u2018in the presence of genius\u2019 was. Ergens anders claimt hij op titelverklarende wijze slechts ge\u00efnteresseerd te zijn in \u2018capturing the real moments\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Twee jaar na The Times They Are a-Changin\u2019 deed Dylan zijn eerste \u2018elektrische\u2019 tour. Het leverde hem veel onbegrip en hoon op. Zo is in Martin Scorsese\u2019s biografie \u2018No Direction Home\u2019 te horen hoe iemand tijdens een concert in Manchester hem voor \u2018Judas\u2019 uitmaakt. Dankzij wederzijds respect en vertrouwen was Feinstein in staat de mens achter Dylans protestzingende persona bloot te leggen. Dit vertrouwen werd door Columbia Records op een zeldzame manier beloond: Dylan mocht de foto zelf uitkiezen.<\/p>\n<p>Hier zien we de \u2018real\u2019 Bob Dylan, een ingetogen filosoof die contrasteert met de opstandeling op het podium. Een jonge artiest die op een emotioneel beladen kruispunt in zijn carri\u00e8re staat.
